A cuddle party is exactly what it sounds like. An event designed for adults to get together and experience physical affection and intimacy through cuddling. The concept was born in a New York City apartment in 2004. Since then, they have spread all over the world.

Cuddle parties are not a front for an orgy. In fact, they aren’t about fulfilling sexual fantasies at all but about developing non-sexual human connections. They attract both singles and couples regardless of their sexuality. At the end of the day, it’s just cuddling, right?

Some participants like to cuddle in groups, others one-on-one, while some like to talk first and not cuddle for a time. Simple enough, right? But, what does the term cuddling include?

Cuddling is a love language all its own. It can mean rubbing feet against feet, hugging, snuggling, head-massages, spooning - it is, indeed, up to you. Ultimately, it's all about respecting each other and most importantly, consent. You shouldn’t be forced to cuddle anyone, ever. Participants should be expected to ask permission in any instance involving physical touch. Period.

Why do people like cuddling so much?

Specifically, cuddling:

  • Increases oxytocin— some call it the love hormone and it makes us feel connected to the world around us by helping us form social bonds and improving our mood.
  • Drops cortisol—the stress hormone which makes us feel anxious.
  • Triggers dopamine—which makes us feel pleasure.

Some find it both sad and weird that actual people pay to snuggle up with each other  to alleviate loneliness. However, since when is physical contact something to be ashamed of?
